Charcoal is burned wood: a drawing made from something that has already been through fire. North Kolkata is like that too. I rub and erase until a building is mostly memory, then I stop. The smudges are not mistakes; they are the evidence that I was there for a while.
Ananya Das trained at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, and draws in charcoal, graphite and torn paper. Her subjects are the facades, tramlines and staircases of north Kolkata, reduced almost to texture. She has been a resident at studios in Baroda and Berlin.
