Watercolour
Watercolour is the only medium that argues back. I put down water, then colour, and I watch where it goes. Kerala in the monsoon is exactly like that — nothing stays inside its edges. I paint to keep up with a place that is always slightly flooding.
Kavya Menon is a self-taught watercolourist from Fort Kochi who paints the backwaters, the monsoon and the sea. She works wet-into-wet on heavy cotton paper and lets the pigment decide a good deal of the composition. Her prints are in homes across Kerala and the Gulf.
