Gouache · Natural pigment
I keep the discipline of the miniature — the border, the flat field, the patient line — but I empty it of kings and hunts. What is left is weather, rooftops, and the particular blue of a Jaipur afternoon. Small paintings ask you to come close. I like what happens to people when they do.
Meera Joshi trained for eleven years under a family of miniature painters in the old city of Jaipur before setting up her own studio near Galta Gate. She grinds most of her pigments by hand and paints with squirrel-hair brushes she makes herself. Her work has been shown at small galleries in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, and she teaches weekend workshops for children in the walled city.
