Rohan Deshmukh

Acrylic

I paint rooms more than pictures. A canvas of two metres changes the air in a space; it becomes a wall you can walk towards. I build the colour in blocks, the way a set is built, and then I knock parts of it down until it starts to feel alive.

Rohan Deshmukh paints very large abstract canvases in an old printing warehouse in Pune. A graduate of Sir J.J. School of Art, he spent a decade designing sets for Marathi theatre, and the scale and bold colour blocks of the stage still run through his work.
